New research in mice suggests that hair greying may be linked to a natural process that removes severely DNA-damaged pigment stem cells, which could potentially lower melanoma risk. Researchers found that certain types of damage cause these cells to mature and leave the stem-cell pool, leading to grey hair. However, other damage may cause them to keep multiplying, which could increase cancer risk. The findings have only been observed in mice and do not prove that grey hair protects humans from cancer.
