In response to controversial remarks made by Rajshahi University (RU) Professor A-Al Mamun from the Mass Communication and Journalism Department regarding the hijab worn by elected RUCSU representatives, Dr. Md. Monirozzaman, Assistant Professor of the Arabic Department, conducted his class in protest on Tuesday (October 28). At 11 a.m., he taught while holding the Holy Qur’an to his chest and wearing traditional Islamic attire.
The controversy began the previous night when Professor Mamun posted photos on Facebook showing female RAKSU and hall parliament members taking their oath while wearing hijabs. In his post, he wrote: “I support this personal freedom. Tomorrow I’ll go to class exercising my personal freedom — wearing two-quarter pants and carrying a bottle of alcohol. Alcohol isn’t a drug! I even have a license to drink! Shibir members, journalists — you’re all welcome!”
Following widespread backlash on social media, Professor Mamun later issued an apology for his remarks.
