After the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, Portugal has now officially recognized Palestine as an independent state. The announcement was made by Portugal’s Foreign Minister from New York on Sunday, September 21.
Previously, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed the recognition of Palestine in a video message, stating that London aims to revive the two-state solution. Australia followed with a joint statement declaring Palestine independent, signed by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Aung.
Canada was the first G7 country to recognize Palestine. With these latest developments, the total number of countries recognizing Palestine has reached 151. Meanwhile, French authorities have announced that an official recognition statement is expected today.
