India has declared that it will no longer allow its water to flow beyond international borders. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the decision on Tuesday, stating, “From now on, India’s water will serve India’s needs. It will be preserved for India’s benefit and harnessed for India’s development.”
Although Modi did not directly name Pakistan in his statement, his remarks come just two weeks after India suspended a 65-year-old water-sharing agreement with its neighbouring country. The move reflects growing tensions between the two nations, which have intensified following a deadly militant attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir last month. India has accused Pakistan of supporting cross-border terrorism—an allegation that Islamabad has strongly denied.
