A dispute over just 30 Taka led to the murder of a friend in Dhaka’s Motijheel area. On Tuesday (May 20), police arrested the accused, Rakib, from the Pir Jangi Mazar area near Motijheel Ideal School. After his arrest, the motive behind the killing was revealed.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed that the victim was Momin, a friend of the accused Rakib. Rakib worked as a cleaner, while Momin was an employee at a local shop.
On the evening of May 12, Rakib, Momin, and another friend named Al Amin picked mangoes from trees in the AGB Colony and Al Helal Zone. They sold the mangoes for 390 Taka at the AGB Colony raw market. Al Amin was given a third of the amount (130 Taka) and left. Rakib spent 80 Taka from the remaining 260 Taka.
Around 9 PM, near the dustbin by the Motijheel Postal Officers’ Colony, Rakib handed 100 Taka to Momin. However, Momin demanded an additional 30 Taka, which led to an argument between them. Both eventually went home.
The next morning (May 13), around 10 AM, they met again near the same dustbin, and the argument over the money resumed. At one point, Rakib slapped Momin. In response, an enraged Momin prepared to strike Rakib with a brick. Rakib then stabbed Momin on the right side of his neck with a mango-cutting knife he was carrying. When Momin collapsed to the ground, Rakib called a rickshaw and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. There, the doctors declared Momin dead. Rakib then fled the hospital.
A case was filed at the Motijheel Police Station following the incident. Rakib was later arrested and, upon being presented in court, gave a confessional statement. The court has since ordered him to be sent to jail.
