Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh, Yao Wen, has expressed China's willingness to assist Bangladesh in implementing the Teesta River water management project, should Dhaka decide to proceed with it.
During a press briefing on Bangladesh-China relations at the Chinese Embassy yesterday, Yao Wen made these remarks in response to a journalist’s query. He emphasized the necessity of implementing the Teesta project as soon as possible for the benefit of the thousands of people living along the river. However, he also underscored that, as a sovereign nation, it is ultimately Bangladesh’s decision whether or not to move forward with the project.
The ambassador recalled that Bangladesh had formally sought China’s assistance for the Teesta project in 2021 by submitting a proposal. After evaluating it, China provided a report to the Bangladesh government in 2023, recommending certain revisions, as the initial plan contained several unnecessary elements. However, since then, Beijing has yet to receive any response from Dhaka regarding the matter.
Addressing the topic of reforms, Yao Wen stated that reform-related issues are internal matters of Bangladesh. He expressed his desire to see stability, unity, and progress in the country.
On medical treatment, the ambassador noted that Bangladeshis traveling to China for healthcare services would have access to three top-rated hospitals in Kunming. He also assured that the medical visa process would be straightforward for those seeking treatment.
Discussing the Rohingya crisis, Yao Wen stressed that China and Bangladesh hold the same position on the issue. He pointed out that a ceasefire between the Arakan Army and the Myanmar government is essential for progress and reiterated China’s commitment to ensuring the smooth repatriation of the Rohingya refugees.
Responding to a question about political relations, he stated that China maintains good ties with all political parties in Bangladesh. He added that Beijing is prepared to collaborate with Dhaka to mark the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations as a new starting point for strengthening strategic communications, enhancing practical cooperation, and deepening Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) partnerships.
Regarding concerns over loans, Yao Wen assured that China does not attach any conditions to its financial assistance. He highlighted the numerous landmark projects China has supported in Bangladesh across various sectors. He also reaffirmed China’s strong support for Bangladesh in preserving its national independence, sovereignty, and dignity, emphasizing that Beijing respects the Bangladeshi people's right to choose a development path that aligns with their national interests.
The Chinese envoy further commented on the recent visit of Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain to China, noting that his decision to make Beijing his first official destination after taking office reflects the high priority the interim government places on its relationship with China.
