Ben & Jerry’s cofounder Jerry Greenfield has resigned after nearly five decades, saying he could no longer “in good conscience” stay with a company silenced on Gaza by its parent, Unilever. In an open letter shared by Ben Cohen, Greenfield called it one of the toughest choices of his life, highlighting the brand’s legacy of social justice and support for Palestine. Tensions with Unilever began in 2021 when Ben & Jerry’s halted sales in Israeli-occupied territories, and deepened after the company labeled Israel’s assault on Gaza a “genocide.” His resignation reflects the widening gap between the cofounders’ activism and Unilever’s efforts to restrain it, as the Gaza war continues claiming tens of thousands of Palestinian lives.
