Belgium is set to recognize the State of Palestine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Belgian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prevot announced.
“Belgium will recognize Palestine at the UN session and will impose strict sanctions on the Israeli government,” Prevot wrote on X on Tuesday.
He outlined 12 sanctions against Israel, including a ban on products from illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank and a review of public procurement with Israeli companies.
Prevot, from Belgium's centrist Christian Democrat party, said the move responds to the humanitarian crisis in Palestine, particularly in Gaza. He added that formal recognition will occur only after the last captive is released from Gaza and Hamas no longer manages Palestine.
