Touhidul Islam, a former student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), has achieved the notable distinction of being appointed as a tenure-track Assistant Professor at Stanford University in the United States. He is the first Bangladeshi to hold such a position at Stanford, which is ranked among the top 10 universities in the QS World University Rankings. Currently, Touhidul Islam is researching the application of artificial intelligence in healthcare. Last year, he received the prestigious 'Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00)' from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States. Hailing from Charghat Upazila in Rajshahi, he excelled academically, achieving GPA-5 in both SSC and HSC exams and graduating from BUET's Electrical Engineering Department in 2005. He then went on to pursue a PhD at Texas A&M University in the U.S. with a scholarship starting in 2014. Touhidul Islam's research focuses on leveraging AI for the early detection of heart disease, brain disorders, and cancer. He described his path to becoming an Assistant Professor at Stanford as a long and challenging one, emphasizing that being the first Bangladeshi in this role is a significant accomplishment. He noted that securing a faculty position at a U.S. university requires passing multiple exams and interviews. Teaching at a university has always been his dream, with Stanford being his top choice.
