In an interview with the Press Trust of India, Prof. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of Bangladesh's interim government, urged the return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India to face trial for alleged atrocities in Bangladesh. Speaking from his official residence in Dhaka, Yunus emphasized that Hasina’s actions must be addressed through a trial to ensure justice for the Bangladeshi people. Yunus criticized Hasina’s political statements from India, labeling them as an “unfriendly gesture” that creates discomfort in both nations. He stated that while Bangladesh values its relationship with India, New Delhi should move beyond a narrative that portrays the Awami League as the sole protector of Bangladesh’s stability, often casting other political parties as Islamist threats. Addressing concerns over recent attacks on Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, Yunus dismissed them as excuses used to manipulate public perception. He stressed that improving India-Bangladesh relations requires collaborative effort, noting that ties are currently strained. Yunus also mentioned the need to revisit bilateral treaties, including the transit agreement and the Adani power deal, suggesting a review of the agreements to ensure they align with current realities on the ground.
