Over the past five and a half years, at least 5,619 students have died in road accidents, accounting for 16.29% of total road fatalities, according to the Road Safety Foundation (RSF). This statistic was highlighted during a press conference in Dhaka marking the anniversary of the Mirsarai tragedy, where 45 people, including 42 students, died in a road accident in 2011. The RSF report revealed that 2,641 victims were from schools and madrasas, and 2,978 were from colleges and universities. Additionally, 833 students died due to crossing railway tracks carelessly. RSF Chairman Dr. AI Mahbub Uddin Ahmed emphasized the need for a sustainable transport strategy and proposed various measures to enhance road safety, including stricter law enforcement and educational campaigns.
