Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reversed the decision to ban battery-run auto rickshaws in cities, including Dhaka, to protect the livelihoods of those dependent on them, according to Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader. However, the ban will still apply to the country's 22 highways. The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) initially decided on the ban on May 15. Protests erupted on May 19, with rickshaw drivers blocking roads in Mirpur, Pallabi, and Agargaon. Demonstrations continued in Rampura-Badda, Kuril, and Khilkhet areas. Police have filed four cases against the protesters in Pallabi, Kafrul, and Mirpur Model police stations for obstructing police duties, vandalism, arson, sabotage, and attacking law enforcement officers.
