In Raipur, Lakshmipur, a 30-year-old man named Zakir Hossain was handed over to the police by his father after he vandalized an idol inside a temple. The incident occurred on Thursday (March 13) night at the Sri Sri Mahamaya Temple in the Genjihata area of the municipal town. Raipur Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jamilul Haque confirmed the matter.
According to Vishwanath Saha, General Secretary of the temple committee, the priest left after completing the evening prayers. When he returned later that night, he found the idol broken and alerted the locals. CCTV footage showed a person with a covered face entering the temple, vandalizing the idol, and leaving. Upon reviewing the footage, Zakir was identified.
Zakir’s father, Monir Ahmed, stated that his son has been struggling with mental health issues since 2018. Although he initially received treatment, financial difficulties prevented further care. After learning about the idol vandalism, he handed his son over to the police himself. ASP Jamilul Haque confirmed that Zakir was identified through external CCTV footage. He is now in police custody, and further legal action will be taken after interrogation.
