The army and police have launched a joint operation in Savar, Ashulia, and Gazipur following significant unrest that led to the closure of over 100 apparel factories. The protests, driven by demands for jobs and better working conditions, have resulted in road blockages, vandalism, and looting of several factories. BGMEA sources report that around 45 factories in Gazipur and 59 in Savar and Ashulia were shut down due to these disturbances. The unrest reportedly began when outsiders, demanding employment, resorted to violence after being informed of no available positions. RMG workers later joined in, adding their own demands, including reduced workloads and better benefits. BGMEA leaders met with Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury to address the crisis, resulting in a directive for immediate action and a call for factories to remain open. Factory owners and industry officials have expressed concerns about the involvement of political groups and outsiders, with allegations of exploitation and incitement by some labor leaders. Key demands from the protests include a two-year ban on worker termination, increased bonuses, better allowances, and job security. The situation remains tense as authorities strive to restore order and meet shipping deadlines amid ongoing political challenges.
