Dhaka University is going to resume classes today (September 22) after a long 112-day shutdown. The university was mainly closed from June 2 to June 30 for Eid-ul-Azha and summer holidays, but exams were going on in some departments. Classes were scheduled to start from July 1, but the university was shut down due to an indefinite strike by the teachers' association demanding cancellation of the "Pratyaya Scheme". Students began boycotting classes and exams demanding quota reform from 7 July, which turned into a national movement and ended with the fall of the Awami government on 5 August. Under the new interim government, despite the opening of hostels and administrative offices, classes could not be started. August 10 Vice-Chancellor Dr. A.S.M. Maksud Kamal resigned and on August 27 Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan was appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor. Classes for the 2023-24 academic year will begin on September 30.
