In Chittagong, 13 government and autonomous organizations owe over Tk 127 crore in unpaid electricity bills, causing financial strain on the Power Development Board (PDB). Despite multiple notices and disconnection attempts, the dues remain unsettled, impacting the PDB's ability to purchase fuel. These organizations, including the Police Force, City Corporation, Health Department, Railway Authority, and others, have promised to pay but have not yet fulfilled these commitments. The PDB sells over Tk 16 crore worth of electricity monthly to these institutions, but the accumulated debt over the past six months has reached Tk 127 crore. Chittagong City Corporation has the largest arrears, with Tk 63.95 crore outstanding. The City Corporation claims to be paying current bills regularly, with most of the debt from previous administrations. The PDB produces an average of 2,180 MW of electricity daily, with a peak demand of 1,407 MW.
