Sudan, the last male northern white rhinoceros, passed away on March 19, 2018, due to age-related health problems and infections, as confirmed by the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. The decision to euthanize him was made when his condition deteriorated to the point where he could no longer stand and was in significant pain. Sudan spent most of his life at Safari Park Dvůr Králové in the Czech Republic before being relocated to Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya in a last-ditch effort to breed with the remaining females. Now, only two female northern white rhinos, Najin and Fatu, are left, but they are incapable of conceiving, rendering the subspecies "functionally extinct."
