The football world has been plunged into mourning following the death of Spanish footballer Jesús de Miguel, who passed away at the age of 30 after suffering a devastating collision with an opposing goalkeeper during a second-division match in Spain.
The CD Tenerife striker died on Tuesday morning, November 3, after sustaining critical injuries during Monday's encounter against FC Andorra at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium. The tragic incident occurred in the 96th minute, when Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out of his penalty area to challenge De Miguel for a long ball. The two players collided violently, leaving the Tenerife forward unconscious on the pitch.
Players from both teams immediately called for medical assistance as the seriousness of the situation became apparent. Medical personnel performed emergency resuscitation, and De Miguel reportedly suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest. Medical teams worked desperately to save the striker, eventually restoring his pulse inside the ambulance before rushing him to the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz. Although Tenerife initially reported that he was stable despite the severity of his condition, he remained unconscious in intensive care. His neurological condition deteriorated during the early hours of Tuesday, and he died at approximately 8am.
The match was subsequently abandoned in the 108th minute. Owono was shown a red card following the collision. Spanish authorities have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding De Miguel's death, with the possibility of involuntary manslaughter being examined. The investigation will seek to establish the circumstances of the collision.
De Miguel spent much of his professional career playing in Spain's lower divisions, representing several clubs before joining CD Tenerife in 2025. One of his notable achievements came with Castellón, where he finished as the club's leading scorer during its successful promotion campaign to Spain's second division in 2024. Following news of his death, tributes poured in from across the football world. Barcelona, Real Madrid, FC Andorra, and numerous other clubs expressed their condolences and solidarity with his family, teammates, and supporters.
The Spanish football federation also postponed scheduled Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina matches on Tuesday as a mark of respect. Football is a sport built around competition, passion, and physical intensity. Yet, moments like this remind everyone that behind the jerseys and rivalries are human lives that deserve care and protection.
Jesús de Miguel's sudden death has left his family, teammates, and supporters devastated. What began as an ordinary football match ended in an unimaginable tragedy. Football has lost a player, a family has lost a loved one, and a community has lost someone whose life and career were still unfolding. May Jesús de Miguel rest in peace.
