Tension erupted during a torch procession of the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Narayanganj after someone shouted the slogan “Joy Bangla.” Chaos broke out in the crowd within moments.
The incident took place around 10 p.m. on Wednesday (November 12) during the NCP’s torch procession from the Narayanganj Central Shaheed Minar, organized in protest against the Awami League’s announced lockdown program scheduled for November 13.
According to reports, the procession reached in front of Bage Jannat Jame Mosque on Salimullah Road in Chashara when a young man suddenly came forward and loudly chanted “Joy Bangla.” This immediately created tension among the participants. NCP activists tried to catch the man but failed. A few chased him, but he escaped through an alley near the mosque.
Describing the incident, NCP leader Shawkat Ali said, “When the procession was passing through Missionpara, a young man at the back suddenly shouted, ‘I say Joy Bangla, do whatever you want to me!’ Some female members were also in our procession. When one of them called for help, we tried to catch him, but he ran away. We couldn’t find him afterward. Although the incident was unexpected, the procession concluded peacefully.”
Among those present at the torch procession were NCP Central Organizer for the Southern Region Shawkat Ali, Central Organizer of Jatiyo Juboshokti Nirab Raihan, former Joint Convener of the District Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Aminul Islam, and former Spokesperson Sarfaraz Haque Sajib, among others.
