Police have detained five people in connection with the torture of a woman who was tied to an electric pole and doused with water amid severe cold in Gulshan, Dhaka.
The suspects were detained on Sunday (January 4) after police reviewed CCTV footage. However, no case has been filed yet in connection with the incident.
Gulshan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Rakibul Hasan confirmed the matter. He said police acted on their own initiative after analyzing CCTV footage and detained five individuals, three of whom are minors.
Regarding further legal action, the OC said the next steps would be decided after consulting senior officials.
According to police and local sources, the incident occurred around 7:30 am on Friday (January 2) in front of the Markazut Ta’lim Al Islami Madrasa in the Gulshan Norda area. Several individuals tied the woman to a pole and poured water on her as a form of torture. A video of the incident later spread on social media, triggering widespread public outrage across the country.
OC Rakibul Hasan said the victim is a homeless woman. Madrasa authorities claimed she had entered the madrasa premises that morning, after which they detained her on allegations of theft and subjected her to the abuse.
Police said all five detainees are students of the madrasa.
