An elderly woman named Zeneda, around 62 years old, was killed after being hit by a Raida Paribahan bus (Dhaka Metro B-123417) in Uttara, Dhaka. The accident occurred at 9:15 am on Tuesday near Zamzam Tower under Uttara West Police Station. Zeneda, a domestic worker and mother of a daughter, was on her way to work in Sector 11 when a speeding bus struck her. Witnesses said the bus, attempting to cross the island while speeding, ran over her, crushing her head and killing her instantly.
After the incident, the driver, Kabir Hossain (42), tried to flee but was caught with public assistance near Uttara Modern Medical Hospital. Sergeant Zakaria Sajib was on duty and helped apprehend him.
Eyewitnesses and pedestrians expressed frustration over road safety issues, noting that despite ongoing protests for safer roads, little attention is given to bus drivers' licenses. They claimed Raida Paribahan operates over a hundred buses in Uttara without valid route permits or fitness certificates. Many passengers have reportedly faced harassment from drivers and helpers, who often operate the vehicles without proper licenses, with helpers frequently taking the wheel.
Hafizur Rahman, OC of Uttara West Police Station, confirmed that the bus and the driver were taken into custody, and legal actions are being pursued regarding the incident.
