The Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2025 has kicked off in a lively and festive atmosphere. This year, a stall representing the anti-discrimination student movement has been set up at the fair. Adjacent to this stall, a dustbin featuring a picture of the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been placed, igniting a wave of debate and criticism on social media.
The controversy gained even more attention when Shafiqul Alam, the press secretary to the Chief Adviser of the interim government, shared the image of the dustbin on his Facebook. The post quickly went viral, sparking discussions among both politicians and the general public across the country. Although Shafiqul Alam later deleted the post, the conversation did not die down, with netizens continuing to share their thoughts and opinions.
Actress Pori Moni has now entered the fray. While not directly addressing the dustbin issue, she posted on Facebook, "Who are the ones dirtying such a beautiful event like the book fair? You are the filth and garbage of this country."
Her post has triggered a flood of reactions. Many have praised her for her bravery, with a user named BH Bandhan commenting, "A courageous girl of our time." Another user, Md. Sharif, wrote, "Keep protesting, Pori Moni. You are brave and unstoppable." Numerous others have echoed her sentiments.
However, the post has also faced considerable criticism. Some have suggested that Pori Moni is supporting the Awami League. One comment read, "Pori Moni has come back as an Awami League supporter." In response, others argued that her courage should not be viewed through a political lens.
Pori Moni, at the center of the controversy, has not removed the post nor offered any explanation. Yet, the online discussions continue, and only time will reveal how long this debate will persist.
