Residents of Banshgata in Gazipur’s Sreepur municipality have built a 50-foot wooden bridge using donations and volunteer labor, following the collapse of a bamboo bridge two months ago. The new bridge connects Wards 7 and 9 and is used daily by over a thousand people, including factory workers.
Local businessman Kaiyum Sarkar said, “People had to cross a decaying, foul-smelling canal to get to work. That’s why we took the initiative ourselves.” Villagers completed the construction in just five days, raising around Tk 50,000 through community contributions.
Sreepur’s Chief Engineer Shahed Akhtar acknowledged the necessity of the bridge and stated that a proposal for a permanent structure has been submitted to the ministry, but progress has been delayed due to high construction costs.
