ChatGPT is facing a criminal investigation after allegations emerged that a suspect in the killing of two Bangladeshi PhD students used the AI tool while attempting to plan the disposal of their bodies.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has launched an inquiry into OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, following reports that the accused, Hisham Abugarbiyeh (26), sought guidance from the chatbot after the murders of Jamil Ahmed Limon and Nahida Sultana Bristi. Prosecutors claim he asked questions about what would happen if a human body were placed in a plastic bag and thrown into a garbage bin.
Authorities say the alleged use of AI in connection with efforts to conceal evidence has raised serious concerns, prompting the state-level investigation into OpenAI’s role and responsibilities.
