The 79th UN General Assembly hosted a high-level side event focused on the Rohingya crisis, where H.E. Professor Muhammad Yunus delivered the keynote address. Yunus outlined three main proposals: 1. He urged the UN Secretary-General to organize a conference involving all stakeholders to assess the crisis and suggest innovative solutions. 2. He emphasized the need to energize the Joint Response Plan, co-managed by the UN and Bangladesh, to secure essential funding and political support for the crisis. 3. He called for the international community to back mechanisms for justice and accountability to address the genocide against the Rohingya in Myanmar. During the same event, Uzra Zeya, the U.S. Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, announced a new humanitarian aid package of $199 million from the United States for Rohingya refugees displaced from Myanmar and currently living in Bangladesh. Since August 2017, the U.S. has provided over $2.5 billion in financial aid related to the Rohingya crisis, with more than $2.1 billion directed to Bangladesh alone.
