Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh has urged the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to reconsider its decision to open an office in Dhaka. In a statement, Hefazat’s Amir, Allama Muhibbullah Babunagari, and Secretary General, Maulana Sajedur Rahman, highlighted concerns over the UN’s stance on LGBTQ and homosexual rights. They noted that Bangladesh, as a predominantly Muslim country, considers homosexuality both religiously and socially prohibited, and it remains a punishable offense under national law. The Hefazat leaders also expressed apprehension over what they termed an “international conspiracy” to establish a Christian state in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT). They added that the activities of certain groups in the CHT, which they described as “terrorism” and “unrest,” amount to treason and asserted that these groups bear responsibility for the deaths of 38,000 Bengalis in the region.
