UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the United Kingdom will recognise Palestinian statehood in September, ahead of the UN General Assembly, if Israel fails to meet certain conditions. As outlined in a cabinet briefing, recognition will move forward unless Israel takes meaningful action to end the crisis in Gaza, agrees to a ceasefire, halts plans for annexation in the West Bank, and commits to a long-term peace process aimed at achieving a Two-State Solution.
Starmer emphasized that “there is no equivalence between Israel and Hamas” and reaffirmed the UK's stance on Hamas: they must release all hostages, agree to a ceasefire, disarm, and accept that they will not have a role in Gaza’s governance.
He added that the situation will be reviewed before the General Assembly to assess compliance from both sides, noting that “no one side will have a veto” over the UK’s decision.
