US President Donald Trump has finally spoken out about Israel’s attack on top Hamas leaders in Doha, Qatar. He expressed dissatisfaction with the way Israel carried out the strike, warning that it could threaten the future of peace talks in Gaza.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday evening (September 9, local time), Trump said:
"I'm not happy with the whole situation. It's not a good situation. But one thing I can say — we want the prisoners back, but we're not happy with the way it happened."
Some of Trump’s advisers were reportedly upset over Israel’s decision to strike in Qatar. According to a US official, Trump was not informed in advance—not by Israel, but by US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Dan Kaine. Following the attack, Trump instructed White House special envoy Steve Witkoff to issue a statement to Qatar.
However, another US official said it was already too late by the time Witkoff attempted to contact the Qataris. Witkoff had met with a top adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu on Monday, but was not informed of the impending attack during their talks.
