U.S. President Donald Trump has informed Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government, that a 35% tariff will be imposed on all Bangladeshi goods entering the U.S. starting August 1, 2025.
In a letter dated July 7, Trump warned that any retaliatory tariffs by Bangladesh would lead to further increases. He stated that the tariff is necessary to correct the long-standing trade imbalance caused by Bangladesh’s tariffs and non-tariff barriers.
Trump emphasized that the U.S. wants a fair and balanced trade relationship and invited Bangladesh to participate in the American economy by producing goods within the U.S., which would not be subject to tariffs.
He also indicated that these tariffs could be revised based on Bangladesh’s willingness to open its markets and remove trade restrictions.
This move follows a previous U.S. decision on April 2 to impose a 37% tariff on Bangladeshi goods. The new rate marks a significant increase from the prior average of 15%.
