US President Donald Trump on Friday suggested that Iran’s reported cancellation of the planned execution of 800 protesters influenced his decision not to attack the Islamic Republic. Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Trump denied that Arab or Israeli officials had persuaded him, saying, “Nobody convinced me. I convinced myself. They didn’t hang anyone. They canceled the hangings. That had a big impact.”
Trump earlier praised Iran’s leadership for calling off the executions, writing on Truth Social, “I greatly respect the fact that all scheduled hangings, which were to take place yesterday (over 800 of them), have been cancelled by the leadership of Iran. Thank you!” The demonstrations in Iran, which began on December 28 over economic issues and expanded into protests against the regime, have left thousands dead according to verified reports.
While Trump earlier threatened military action if protesters were killed, reports indicate that Israel still believes a US strike remains possible, dependent on diplomatic developments. Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently held multiple calls regarding Iran. Gulf allies, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Egypt, also reportedly urged Trump not to launch an attack, warning of potential regional escalation.
The Iran Human Rights group has verified 3,428 deaths in the nationwide protests, although the toll may be higher due to restricted access and an internet blackout in early January.
