In a shocking incident of racial violence, a 24-year-old university student from Tripura was beaten to death in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, after being subjected to racist abuse, including being called “Chinese.” The victim, Angel Chakma, a final-year MBA student at a private university in Dehradun, died on Friday, 26 December, after spending 17 days in hospital.
Angel’s father, Tarun Chakma, a serving Border Security Force (BSF) jawan currently posted in Manipur, has demanded justice, alleging that his son was targeted solely because of his appearance and identity as a Northeastern Indian.
According to the family, the incident took place on 9 December at a local market in Dehradun, where Angel and his younger brother, Michael Chakma, were confronted by six youths. The group allegedly blocked their way and pushed Michael to the ground. When Angel protested, the attackers surrounded him and hurled racist slurs, repeatedly calling him “Chinese.”
