Tom Cruise received the first Oscar of his career after being presented with an Honorary Academy Award at the 18th Governors Awards on Sunday night. The award was handed to him by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who is currently directing Cruise in an upcoming 2025 film—a rare collaboration that made the moment even more significant.
During an emotional speech, Cruise reflected on how profoundly the recognition impacted him, saying it felt like “fuel to do more—to keep learning and giving my best.” He added, “I’ve been given so much. The art, the craft, the magic of filmmaking—it’s everything to me.”
Standing on stage, he said he felt the entire world “beautifully gathered in this room, bigger than anything else.”
The ceremony also paid tribute to Debbie Allen, Wynne Thomas, and Diddy Patron Award recipients, and posthumously honored director William Friedkin, producer Lani Chapman, and casting director Tobe Courtney. For Cruise—now a four-time nominee—this marked his first-ever Oscar acceptance speech, a milestone in his decades-long career.
