Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has rejected allegations of communal persecution under his leadership, insisting there is “no anti-Hindu violence” in Bangladesh. Speaking to Mehdi Hasan of Zeteo on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Yunus said, “One of India’s specialties right now is fake news,” dismissing accusations made against his interim government.
His remarks came in response to criticism following a massive protest in November, where around 30,000 Hindus demonstrated against his administration. The issue even drew international attention, with U.S. President Donald Trump calling Bangladesh’s treatment of Hindus “barbaric.”
Yunus also reflected on his unexpected rise to leadership after mass student protests toppled Sheikh Hasina’s government last year. Referring to the protestors’ demands, he said, “If you have sacrificed so much, I will change my mind.” Despite his appointment, Yunus’s government continues to grapple with serious challenges, including growing robbery cases and the deaths of dozens of police officers in the aftermath of Hasina’s exit.
