The Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) is facing criticism after free cigarettes were reportedly distributed at a campus concert, sparking heated discussions on social media over slogans raised during the event.
The concert, “Kuashar Gaan,” was held Saturday on the central field and co-organized by DUCSU and a platform called Spirit of July. Students reported that cigarettes were handed out free of charge at a stall. Critics pointed out this violates the Smoking and Tobacco Products (Control) Act 2005 (amended 2013), which bans free distribution of tobacco to entice use and sets penalties including fines and imprisonment.
DUCSU’s literary and cultural secretary, Mosaddik Ali Ibn Mohammad, who was criticized, posted on Facebook expressing regret. He claimed he was only involved in guest and stage management and was unaware of the free cigarette distribution. The concert’s sponsor, Ex Force, had said they would set up a “smoking zone” to prevent disturbance to other attendees, but Mosaddik said he did not know cigarettes would be given for free.
Students also criticized the slogans raised at the concert, mocking Mosaddik’s chants in response. Some condemned the union for encouraging tobacco use while claiming to oppose drugs. Mosaddik acknowledged the “overall mismanagement” in a Facebook post.
