India’s Uttar Pradesh has issued a strict directive targeting stray dogs, stating that any dog that bites a person could face detention or even a lifetime stay at an Animal Birth Control (ABC) Centre. First-time biters will be kept for 10 days, microchipped, and then released.
Repeat offenders will be assessed by a three-member team comprising livestock officers, municipal representatives, and SPCA members. If the bite is deemed unprovoked, the dog may remain at the ABC Centre for life unless adopted.
For a case to be registered, victims must provide a treatment certificate from a government hospital. The move follows Supreme Court guidelines on managing stray dogs in Delhi-NCR, which emphasize sterilization, vaccination, and safe release.
