Awami League activist Shyamal Chandra (38) has been arrested in connection with the murder of Jamaat-e-Islami activist Shahabul Islam in Sundarganj, Gaibandha. Sundarganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Hakim Azad confirmed the arrest on Tuesday, December 10. Shyamal, son of the late Nepal Chandra of Manmoth village, was apprehended in the Bamondanga Station Bazar area based on a tip-off. He is listed as the 34th accused in the murder case of Shahabul, who was killed during the January 5, 2014, national elections at the Monmath Government Primary School polling station. The case, filed 10 years later on October 22 by Shahabul’s brother SM Shahjahan Kabir, names 79 individuals, including former MP Manjurul Islam Liton’s wife, Syeda Khurshid Jahan Smriti, as the primary accused, along with 40-50 unnamed individuals.
