The High Court has ordered the cessation of battery-operated rickshaw operations in Dhaka within three days. The directive was issued on Tuesday (November 19) by a High Court bench comprising Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Mahmudur Raji. The court also asked for an explanation as to why the failure of relevant authorities to halt battery-operated rickshaws should not be declared unlawful. Lawyers Sanjid Siddiqi and Tahsina Mridu represented the petitioner during the hearing. Currently, Dhaka has around 1.2 million rickshaws, with a significant number being battery-operated. Moreover, many traditional pedal rickshaws are being converted into battery-powered ones.
