Security guard Amin Abdullah was killed while attempting to protect worshippers during a deadly shooting at a mosque in San Diego, California, authorities said.
Police reported that Abdullah, who was employed at the Islamic Center of San Diego, played a key role in helping prevent the attack from becoming more severe. San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl described his actions as heroic, saying he likely saved lives.
The shooting left three people dead after two teenage suspects opened fire outside the mosque before later taking their own lives. Abdullah, a father of eight, was among those killed. Investigators are treating the incident as a suspected hate crime.
