Once one of the most underdeveloped communities in the hills, the Mro have seen progress, with Sanchang Mro becoming their first female doctor. Her journey was motivated by personal loss—her sister’s death and her mother’s illness due to inadequate medical care. Her father, Kaingpre Mro, vowed to make one of his children a doctor. Sanchang began her education at home, taught by her father. Later, she attended various hostels and schools, excelling despite financial hardships. She earned scholarships in both primary and secondary school. After overcoming obstacles, including not being able to afford enrollment at Holy Cross College, supportive teachers helped her continue her studies. She eventually cleared the entrance exam for Rangamati Medical College, where she is now interning. Throughout her journey, she received assistance from several individuals and organizations. Sanchang aims to improve healthcare access in the hills, ensuring no one else suffers from the lack of medical care that impacted her family. Her success is celebrated by the Mro community.
