Reshmi Akter, an 11-year-old girl who was on life support, passed away on Thursday morning at the ICU of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH). She was a fourth-grade student at Barrister Milky Memorial School and College and had been in critical condition since May 7 after being accidentally shot in the Raufabad area. CMCH Director Brigadier General Taslim Uddin confirmed her death at around 9:45 am.
According to reports, the incident happened when Reshmi was sent by her mother to a nearby shop to buy betel leaf. While she was in an alley in the Raufabad Bihari Colony, masked attackers opened fire targeting a young man named Hasan Raju. A stray bullet hit Reshmi in the left eye and went into her head. Raju died at the scene, while Reshmi remained on life support until her death. She was the youngest of five siblings and the daughter of a vegetable seller.
Her mother filed a case on May 9 against unidentified attackers at Bayezid Bostami Police Station. Police say the investigation is ongoing, but the motive and identities of those involved are still unknown.
