The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control, and Research (IEDCR) has detected the Reovirus in Bangladesh for the first time, identifying it in five individuals tested for Nipah virus symptoms in 2024. IEDCR Director Prof. Tahmina Shirin confirmed that all affected patients recovered fully after treatment, with no severe illnesses reported. The health department assured there is no cause for alarm. Unlike the Nipah virus, often linked to drinking raw date juice in winter, Reovirus cases have not spread widely. The discovery resulted from IEDCR’s research in partnership with Columbia University, USA.
