Ahead of Bangladesh’s 13th national parliamentary election in February, the Election Commission (EC) has introduced a strict code of conduct for political parties and candidates. The rules ban posters and drones in campaigns, limit the number and size of billboards, prohibit campaigning abroad, and require all manifestos to be presented on a single stage. Social media campaigns must be registered with the returning officer, and AI cannot be used for deceptive or manipulative purposes. Hate speech, personal attacks, and misleading or defamatory content are also forbidden. Violations may lead to up to six months in jail, fines for candidates and parties, or cancellation of a candidate’s nomination. These measures are designed to promote fair, transparent, and responsible campaigning.
