A former university student from Poland, Karolina Krzyzak, was found dead in a Bali hotel room after following an extreme fruit-only diet that left her weighing just 49 pounds. Karolina adopted the “fruitarian” lifestyle at 19, becoming obsessed with body image and raw food.
By 2024, the 27-year-old former Leeds University student had traveled to Bali but was so frail she could barely stand or turn in bed. Upon checking into the Sumberkima Hill resort in December, staff were alarmed by her emaciated state—her hollow eyes and visible collarbone were stark reminders of her condition. Despite offers to call a doctor, Karolina refused, asking instead for fruit deliveries to her room.
Resort manager Bernard Hudepohl said such dietary requests weren’t unusual in Bali, given its wellness-focused culture. Over the next few days, Karolina rarely left her room, struggling even to sit outside. Three days later, after a concerned friend failed to reach her, staff checked her room and found her dead.
According to Emilia, a former fruitarian and Karolina’s online friend, she had been battling severe osteoporosis and an albumin deficiency that caused swelling before her death.
