A Polish lawmaker sparked controversy in parliament in Warsaw after displaying an Israeli flag altered with a Nazi swastika in place of the Star of David while criticizing Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Konrad Berkowicz held up the modified flag during a speech in the Sejm, Poland’s lower house, where he strongly criticized the Israeli government and called on Poland to cut ties with Israel.
The incident triggered protests from several lawmakers, who condemned the act as antisemitic. Critics argued that such imagery was offensive and inappropriate in a parliamentary setting.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk also condemned the display, stating that there is no place in Polish public life for antisemitism, hate, or the disrespect of victims of Nazi crimes.
Parliament Speaker Szymon Hołownia said he had asked legal experts to examine whether the lawmaker’s actions violated Polish law.
The incident comes at a time of growing debate across Europe over Israel’s actions in Gaza, with increasing criticism seen in several national parliaments and the European Parliament.
