U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday (January 6, 2026) said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “not that happy” with him due to tariffs imposed by Washington on India over its purchases of Russian oil.

Speaking at the House GOP Member Retreat, Trump claimed, “Prime Minister Modi came to see me, ‘Sir, may I see you please.’ Yes, I have a very good relationship with him. He’s not that happy with me because they’re paying a lot of tariffs now, but they have reduced their Russian oil purchases substantially.”

Trump has levied a 50% tariff on India, including a 25% charge specifically for Russian oil imports. He also noted that India told him it has been waiting for five years to receive Apache helicopters.
