A gas balloon descending from the sky sparked widespread panic in Cachar district, Assam, in India’s northeast. The balloon is believed to have drifted from Bangladesh and landed in a field in the district on Monday.
According to reports by Indian media NDTV, a large gas balloon from Bangladesh’s Sylhet district was recovered in Cachar, causing alarm among locals. The balloon reportedly had the name of Ghilachara Bidirectional High School printed on it and was found in Barkhola area of Cachar.
Local residents said the unusually large balloon landed in an agricultural field, immediately attracting attention. Alarmed villagers first informed the Village Defence Party (VDP), who later contacted the police.
A police team, led by Senior Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das, arrived at the scene, though a large crowd had already gathered. The balloon also displayed images of three individuals and some text in Bengali.
Police have launched an investigation to determine how the balloon crossed the international border and whether it raises any security concerns.
