Ashfaq Chowdhury (40) was supposed to attend the prize-giving ceremony of a football tournament organized by his own organization on Friday afternoon. He had even bought a train ticket on Thursday night to travel from Dhaka to Chattogram. But the trip never happened. Instead of returning alive, his body is being taken back to his village.
Ashfaq Chowdhury was a resident of South Barumchhara village in Pukuria Union of Banshkhali upazila, Chattogram. His father, Md Naderuzzaman Chowdhury, is a former headmaster of Banigram Sadhanpur High School.
According to family sources, Ashfaq was walking beneath a building in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Thursday afternoon on his way to work when an iron rod fell from above and struck his head. He was rushed in critical condition to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Ashfaq worked at a multinational company in Gulshan. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, his parents, siblings, and many relatives.
Family members said that after an autopsy at United Hospital in Dhaka, his body will be buried today (Saturday) in his native village in South Barumchhara, Pukuria Union, Banshkhali.
Speaking to Prothom Alo over the phone, Ashfaq’s cousin Shahidul Islam said Ashfaq was the general secretary of the local social organization Jagoroni Club. He was scheduled to travel to Chattogram on Thursday night to attend the final of a football tournament organized by the club. “Sadly, we could not bring him back alive. We are returning to the village with his body,” he said with grief.
