Palestinian journalist Saleh Aljafarawi, widely known for his brave coverage of Israel’s two-year war on Gaza, was shot dead on Sunday during clashes in Gaza City’s Sabra neighbourhood, Al Jazeera Arabic reported. Witnesses said he was documenting renewed fighting when members of an Israel-linked militia opened fire. Verified footage showed his body, still wearing a “press” vest, being carried away on a truck.
The 28-year-old journalist gained recognition for his fearless frontline reporting, sharing raw accounts of life under relentless bombardment. He had received numerous threats from Israel for his work. In a past interview, Aljafarawi said, “I lived in fear every second, never knowing what the next moment would bring.” He was displaced multiple times throughout the war, which he once described as “467 days of horror no one will ever forget.”
His death raises the number of journalists killed in Gaza to over 270 since the conflict began in October 2023, making it the deadliest war for media workers in modern history. The killing occurred just days after a fragile ceasefire, highlighting the ongoing danger and instability faced by reporters in the besieged region.
