In Matiranga upazila, Khagrachhari, over 500 leaders and activists from the Awami League, Jatiya Party, and National Citizens’ Party (NCP) joined the BNP on Monday evening. To mark their induction, the district BNP organized a program at a local community center in Matiranga.
Among those joining were former general secretary of the now-suspended Matiranga Awami League municipal branch, Md. Saiful Islam, Jatiya Party municipal general secretary Md. Alauddin, and NCP upazila committee member Liton Biswas. They presented floral bouquets to Wadud Bhuiya, the BNP’s candidate for the Khagrachhari parliamentary seat and district president, before formally joining the party.
Welcoming the new members, Khagrachhari district BNP president Wadud Bhuiya said, “Inspired by the ideals of the late President Ziaur Rahman and under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, this induction will play an important role in building a new Bangladesh. It will strengthen BNP’s organizational base in Matiranga and have a positive impact on future movements and electoral politics.”
Other speakers included Matiranga municipal BNP president Md. Shahjalal Kajol, Saiful Islam from Awami League, and Alauddin from Jatiya Party.
Commenting on the induction, former Jatiya Party municipal general secretary Md. Alauddin said, “BNP is a party for the people of this country. Its role in upholding citizens’ rights and the value of voting inspired us. That’s why over 500 leaders and activists from Jatiya Party and NCP have joined to support Wadud Bhuiya.”
Another inductee, Awami League municipal general secretary Md. Saiful Islam, said, “Given the current political situation in the country, the movement to restore democracy, and confidence in BNP’s announced programs, I have joined the party.”
The program was also attended by Khagrachhari district BNP vice-president Abu Yusuf Chowdhury, Monindra Kishore Tripura, Nasir Ahmad Chowdhury, joint secretary Abdul Malek, Md. Mosharraf Hossain, and Matiranga upazila BNP general secretary Md. Badiul Alam, among others.
Regarding the new members, Jatiya Party Khagrachhari district general secretary and parliamentary candidate Mithila Royaja said most were unfamiliar to them, adding their induction would not impact the party’s activities or elections. Subodh Bikash Chakma, member secretary of Khagrachhari district NCP, made a similar statement, noting that the joining members were not active in their former party and many were unknown to them.
Commenting on Awami League members joining, Matiranga municipal BNP president Md. Shahjalal said, “None of the Awami League members who joined BNP have pending cases. Although they were Awami League supporters or workers, there were no complaints against them while the party was in power, and they caused no harm. We have welcomed their induction positively.”
