More than 1,000 writers, including Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners, have launched a boycott against Israeli publishers in reaction to the situation in Gaza. Organized by the Palestine Festival of Literature in collaboration with groups such as Books Against Genocide and Fossil Free Books, the letter was published on October 28. Among the signatories are Nobel laureates Abdulrazak Gurnah and Annie Ernaux, Pulitzer Prize winners Viet Thanh Nguyen and Junot Díaz, and bestselling author Sally Rooney. The letter asserts that "Israeli cultural institutions, often collaborating closely with the state, have played a significant role in obscuring, concealing, and artwashing the dispossession and oppression of millions of Palestinians for decades." It further claims that "Israel has killed at least 43,362 Palestinians in Gaza since October." In response, UK Lawyers for Israel have warned of possible legal repercussions for authors supporting the boycott, arguing that it contravenes UK anti-discrimination laws. Additionally, a counter-letter from the Creative Community for Peace, endorsed by authors such as Mayim Bialik, Sir Simon Schama, Simon Sebag-Montefiore, and Nobel laureate Elfriede Jelinek, opposes the boycott and raises concerns about the harassment of Israeli and Jewish authors who do not renounce Israel.
